Part 1 / Part 2
Kitchen
Let’s Cook a Beefstew ~Silver Part~
Silver: Beefstew… a stew of all things huh. I hope I don’t mess up this one.
Chef Ghost: “Of all things?” Is something about it worrying you?
Silver: The truth is… I have a habit of suddenly falling asleep.
Silver: This happening in the middle of cooking isn’t an exception… I messed my cooking up many times because I fell asleep in the middle.
Chef Ghost: I heard your reason for applying to this class briefly, but you really do have a sleeping habit…
Riddle: Falling asleep mid-cooking is extremely dangerous. It didn’t turn into a fire?
Silver: In the Valley of Thorns, it’s common to use magic for cooking. We also use magic to start the fire for the cooking.
Silver: Falling asleep interrupts the magic and the fire disappears, so even for me there’s no risk of causing a fire.
Chef Ghost: Hahaha. That’s a natural way to prevent one from forgetting to turn the gas off.
Silver: Also, when I still couldn’t use magic, my father was in charge of casting fire magic for me.
Silver: So even if I fell asleep, my father took care of the fire, and of the cooking unfortunatel-... I mean, he took care of the cooking for me.
Silver: When I was young, I didn’t realize my father was protecting me.
Silver: So I thought I could do it on my own…
Silver: One time when my father was out, I started a fire from some twigs and tried to cook alone.
Silver: It was a very cold day… so I tried to make a pot-au-feu for my father.
Silver: I was able to cut the ingredients, put them in a pot and add seasoning without problems…
Silver: But that was where I might’ve become remiss. I fell asleep with the fire still burning beneath the pot.
Riddle: T-That is dangerous! It wasn’t a fire caused by magic right?
Riddle: What happened?
Silver: Somehow I woke up before it turned into a fire. But by then all the water was gone…
Silver: I panicked and added more water to the pot, but the burnt parts of the ingredients melted and the whole soup turned black.
Silver: The cooking attempt was a failure. The house was smelling burnt. Just when I was feeling lost, my father returned.
Riddle: ...Did he scold you?
Silver: No. He smiled and said “The important thing is that you aren’t hurt”.
Silver: He also said “Turn this failure into sustenance and connect it to the next try”.
Silver: On top of it he also started eating the burnt pot-au-feu with no hesitations.
Silver: My father said “It’s quite deep in a different way” but… it wasn’t very edible.
Riddle: He is a very kind father.
Silver: Yeah, I’m very proud of him.
Riddle: You didn’t learn how to cook from your father?
Silver: He’s skilled with the sword and with magic but… when it comes to cooking the ingredients, the process, everything is according to his mood.
Silver: His seasoning is also very unique… so I never really followed his example.
Silver: That’s why I have my own style in cooking. Saying that, I just thought anything was good as long as it was edible.
Silver: I cut meat and vegetables and fried them with salt and pepper, and sometimes I made risotto out of leftovers.
Riddle: Having your own personal style in cooking is admirable on its own. I have never made food alone.
Chef Ghost: Hey, you two! Move your hands, not your mouths!
Silver: Right, I apologize… First we have to cut the vegetables right.
Silver: I’ll peel the carrots.
*slither slither*
Chef Ghost: Oh~ you’re good with your hands.
Silver: I’m used to handling sharp things.
Silver: Next are the onions right.
*rip rip*...
Riddle: Silver, I’m also using onions. Would you teach me how to peel them?
Chef Ghost & Silver: ….?
Riddle: W-Why are you two looking at me so strangely!? Did I ask such a weird question…?
Silver: You should just peel it with your hands.
Riddle: I’m not asking about the how-to-do-it… err, I just can’t tell where the husk starts and where it ends.
Silver: You meant it that way. The husk is the נrown and thin part at the top. The white part is edible.
Chef Ghost: If there’re some brown parts mixed in just cut them with a knife later.
Riddle: Peeling off only the brown part… it makes me uneasy when there are unnatural dents left.
Chef Ghost: You’re really attentive, Riddle-kun!
Silver: It’s alright. In the worst case, even if some husk stays you can eat it by sticking it to your mouth.
Chef Ghost: And Silver-kun is pretty crude, despite his looks!
Silver: Alright, I cut the vegetables and the meat. Now I need to melt butter into the hot pot…
Silver: And roast the beef.
Silver: I should put in the vegetables now. ...usually I add salt and pepper and the dish is done.
Chef Ghost: If it was a meat for steak it would’ve been most delicious this way. But shank meat and sinewy meat taste better when they’re stewed~.
Silver: So the type of the meat is different depending on what you’re cooking. I’ve never paid much attention to it until nowץ
Silver: ….Chef, the onions turned transparent. Should I stop frying them now?
Chef Ghost: Oh, looking good! Let’s add some water and stew them.
Silver: The problematic stewing part is finally starting. I hope I won’t fall asleep…
Chef Ghost: Fufufu… I have just the perfect item to solve your worries.
Silver: The perfect item?
Chef Ghost: “Of all things?” Is something about it worrying you?
